The issue of transmitting credit card numbers over the Internet is a concern to many, even though it is my belief that credit card fraud on the Internet is not nearly as common as the media has played it up to be.
Our shopping cart system, by Americart, supports both secure and non-secure browsers. Upon pressing Send on the secure order form, you may be prompted by a message stating that the resulting email is Not Secure, which although technically true, but here is how the orders are processed...
Your website order travels from your computer to the Secure Cart Server where, if your browser supports Secure Socket Layer transmission, the data is transfered under 128 bit encryption. The last six digits of the credit card are removed from the order and stored on the Secure Cart Server and the balance of the order is sent to our processing center via a non-secure email server for processing. The missing password protected credit card information is retrieved via Secure Socket Layer by our bookkeeper while processing orders. All sensitive internal customer information is password protected.
